Primary Thematic Discipline of Center: Agriculture

Brief Description of Center:

Bayero University established the CDA to be able to generate sustainable agricultural technologies that would increase the productivity of crops and livestock in the semi-arid and dry sub-humid environments of Nigeria and the West and Central African (WCA) sub-regions. The Centre works towards building human resource capacity at the appropriate level to meet the demand for improved technologies needed to adapt to the changing environment in the regions. The Centre, as part of its objectives, will support graduates who would be able to engage themselves in production and research on dryland agriculture that will provide relevant and appropriate solutions to the regional agricultural and development problems.

Thus, the CDA aims to be a regional center of excellence in teaching, research and development in Agriculture, especially Dryland Agriculture. The Centre supports degree training at the postgraduate level, as well as specialized short-term trainings targeted at imparting specific skills to specific target groups. The postgraduate programme lead to the award of Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master (M.Sc.) and Doctorate (Ph.D.) Degrees in four (4) areas of Dryland Agriculture namely:

  1. Natural Resource Management and Climate Change
  2. Crops and Cropping Systems
  3. Range and Livestock Management
  4. Livelihoods and Natural Resource Economics

Key Objectives and Expected Outcomes:

The objectives of the Centre are to promote excellence in teaching and human resource development through postgraduate training and short courses; achieve excellence in research by undertaking quality, trans-disciplinary and demand driven research to improve the resilience of the drylands, reduce human and environmental vulnerabilities and support sustainable intensification and diversity of agricultural production systems; develop excellence in strengthening outreach programmes and deployment of appropriate innovative, affordable and adaptable technologies for skills and capacity building of farmers, livestock practitioners, extension workers and other stakeholders; and provide leadership and administrative excellence in the execution of agricultural research, sustainable management of the environment and provision of policy direction on agricultural matters in WCA
