Primary Thematic Discipline of Center: Health

Brief Description of Center:

Phytomedicine research has played and continues to play a major role in the discovery of drugs and medicines. The African Centre of Phytomedicine Research and Development (ACEPRD) thus seeks to contribute its quota through research into medicinal plants, microorganisms and fungi in our ecosystem for lead molecules and creating a comprehensive regional and national repository that will serve as a research tool for the academia and industry in drug development. ACEPRD seeks to stimulate excellence in research and training, facilitating storage and sharing of information in drug discovery, production and application of phytomedicine for development in Africa. Thus the ACEPRD vision is to address regional and national health challenges; strengthening capacity through application of phytomedicine research and development.

Key Objectives and Expected Outcomes:

The main objective of ACEPRD is to achieve excellence in educational training and applied research in discovery, production and management of phytomedicine. Specific objectives include enhancement of manpower development through quality training at national and regional level in postgraduate programs related to phytomedicine; Increasing availability of phytomedicine through academia-industry relationship; Strengthening the education of traditional medical practitioners; Facilitating the integration of traditional herbal medicine practice in the healthcare delivery system in the sub-region; and Conservation of biodiversity through cultivation and preservation of medicinal plants.

Major Accomplishments to Date:

  1. National Universities Commission accreditation of MSc & PhD programmes in Pharmacognosy, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical microbiology, Biotechnology, and Bioinformatics &Genomics
  2. Enrollment of students (including regional) for various postgraduate programmes
  3. Organising short courses for traditional medicine practitioners, other health professional and students
  4. English for Special Purposes (ESP) for regional students from Francophone countries
  5. E-learning development with subscription to Science Direct and NgREN
  6. Internships for students in industries to forge academia-industry partnerships
  7. Renovation of buildings for Centre Secretariat and laboratories
  8. Procurement of lab equipment for phytomedicine research
  9. Research into medicinal plants for bioactive compounds; anti-snake venom vaccine research (GpMuc); antifungal products (Scabiplus). Sponsorship of Faculty and students to conferences/workshops to present research findings
  10. Establishment of herbal farm
