Brief Description of Center: The Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre Kumasi (RWESCK) was formally established in 2014. In 2014, RWESCK metamorphosed from the Water Resources and Environmental Sanitation Programme (WRES) funded by the Netherlands Government when the Government of Ghana signed a loan agreement of US$8 million with the World Bank. The Centre is hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology – Ghana’s premier Science and Technology University. The Centre currently runs three (3) PhD programmes in Water Resources, Environmental Sanitation and Waste Management, Water Supply and Treatment Technologies and two (2) Masters programmes in Water Resources Engineering and Management and Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation. Additionally, it runs specialized short courses in broad areas of Water and Environmental Sanitation. Strategically, RWESCK is being positioned to become a renowned International Centre for Water and Environmental Sanitation.


Key Objectives and Expected Outcomes:

  • Graduate 40 PhD’s and 140 MSc’s, offer specialized short courses to not less than 800 participants
  • Construct a Centre Building laboratories fitted with modern scientific equipment and instruments for high quality research
  • Engage in regional and local partnerships with academia and industry
  • Revise programme curriculum and seek international accreditation for PhD and MSc programmes
  • Leverage on the World Bank and attract more funding, international faculty, international students, regional, local and international partners

Major Accomplishments to Date:

  • 46 PhD ‘s enrolled, 122 MScs enrolled; first cohort of 27 MSc students graduated in 2017
  • 12 partnership agreement signed with regional and local academic/industrial partners
  • 356 trained in specialized short courses in WASH
  • First regional conference and School on Climate Change, Water and Environmental Sanitation held in 2017
  • Centre Building under construction and about 78% completed
  • Purchase of ultramodern laboratory equipment for research
