Brief Description of Center:

The African University of Science and Technology (AUST),  Abuja is a  pan-African research university designed to serve all of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with the goal that her research products, services, students and graduates will help strengthen and foster the economic growth and development of SSA. The university runs post graduate programme with faculty drawn from renowned universities in developed economies and students drawn from SSA. The university hosts the Pan African Materials Institute (PAMI), an Africa Center of Excellence (ACE) with a focus on Materials Science and Engineering.

PAMI has a goal of “Materials for African Development” i.e., using science and technology to add value to the abundant materials and mineral resources in Africa to develop the continent and add value to people.  Africa has a lot of mineral and material resources but, unfortunately it does not have a critical mass of people with knowledge to extract and process these into value-added products and services.  PAMI is constituted by up to 17 active partner institutions spread across different continents on the globe, engaged in research and training activities on Materials Science and Engineering that has relevance to African development.  The centre has 3 major thematic areas, described as Focused Research Groups (FRGs), which engage in teaching and research in the following areas::-

  • Multifunctional Materials: Mineral Processing; Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure; Materials for Water Purification.
  • Materials for Energy: renewable energy technologies including organic solar cells, light emitting devices and perovskites
  • Materials for Health (also called Biomaterials): Drug-delivery systems and theranostic devices for improved health.


Key Objectives and Expected Outcomes:

Motivated by the need to explore ways of adding value to Africa’s rich array of natural resources in ways that can impact the lives of African people, PAMI uses a systems-based interdisciplinary approach to bring together a Pan African and international team of scientists, engineers, industrialists, policymakers, as well as development stakeholders to engage in training and research activities in solar energy, health, water purification and affordable housing/infrastructure. PAMI uses pedagogical problem solving approaches which are now being structured to make lecture rooms become active learning environments.  The reach of PAMI training and research activities are being boosted by the development of Massive Open Online Courses that would be disseminated across the continent.

PAMI expects to graduate more than 50 PhDs, 200MSc and 1000 people with 40 contact-hours in hands-on skills that are convertible into products and services.  These activities would be backed by a strong publication record in high-impact factor journals, describing the outcome of the research, training and outreach activities.


Major Accomplishments to Date:

PAMI has already graduated a total of 15 PhDs, 35 M Sc and 862 people with 40 contact hours study in PAMI hands-on training activities.  PAMI has published up to 107 international high-impact factor journal papers and its graduates are well sought after by industries.  Many PAMI graduates have found employment locally and across the globe.  PAMI has emerged as one of the training centers (in Mining and Minerals Processing Engineering) under the Partnership for Applied Skills in Engineering and Technology (PASET) as well as a regional node in the Mathematics and Science for Sub Saharan Africa (MS4SSA) initiative where the flipped class-room model is being disseminated to all institutions including universities.  Currently, PhD enrollment is 58 students while Masters students are 59 and up to 30 % of these students are female, with a credible regional representation.  All PAMI courses have been accredited locally by the National Universities Commission of Nigeria, and efforts are on-going to get international accreditation after gap assessment and evaluation by ABET consultants.  PAMI has emerged as a true African Center for Teaching and Learning where world class education is achieved with affordable African prices.
